WHY "BUSH BUNNY?"

I was working in a orphanage which consisted of seventeen small houses scattered out across a full mile. The road connecting them was loose sand and because Mozambique lies within fifteen degrees of the equator it was hot and humid. I walked that road at least two times a day and it was very tiring. I love horses and a horse seemed the perfect answer to the transportation problem. Mozambique is not know for horses, but after two weeks of searching I was able to find a donkey.

The donkey, Old Faithful, was perfect, except for his passion for the greens in our garden. There are no fences in Mozambique. It's open grazing for animals. So, I would tie Old Faithful to a new tree each morning and evening so he could graze. One afternoon I led Old Faithful down a bush path through an area where waist-high grass lined both sides of the trail. Old Faithful had his mind set on the garden, and I was focused on keeping him headed in the right direction. We were both taken by surprise when a huge rabbit squirted strait up out of the tall grass and landed on the path in front of us. I yelled and leaped aside while my faithful donkey bolted toward the garden.
Some of the kids who saw this said I jumped higher than the rabbit. Since then I have been Bush Bunny Brenda.
