FAQ AND ANSWERS

Why is Brenda Lange called "Bush Bunny Brenda?"

It was a nickname given to Brenda by the children she helps in Mozambique.  Please read the basics of this amusing story now, or you can enjoy this and her other adventures in her book African Adventures.                   top

Why such a remote place in Africa?

We have been called to "pioneer evangelize," to go into areas where no one else has ever gone.  We need to go there, because no one else is! We have been sent to the "ends of the earth," as described in Acts 1:8.  Please visit our mission page for more information.                                                              top

Do you allow people to come for short-term missions?  How much does it cost? What would I be doing while there?

A short term trip with Orphans Unlimited must last at least 30 - 90 days, due to the cost-effectiveness of travel.  Monthly support needs to be about $200/mo., but you should raise an extra $300/mo. to cover travel and possible medical expenses.  We can only host short-term missionaries between June and November.  You also must have your own medical insurance and have a adventurous, flexible spirit ready to "rough it." For a overview of what to bring and expect, please visit our Come to Africa page.

There are many construction projects that could use a helping hand, as well as children's ministries, preschool work, agriculture and job skills training.

Group trips are also a possibility.  Please contact us for more information on either individual or group trips.                                                          top

How much support does a missionary need to live there?

A full-time missionary would need at least $500/mo. as a bare minimum, but $800 - $1,000/mo. would be a more comfortable existence. All food, medical needs, board and utilities would be included in that amount.                             top

What languages do the people speak in Mozambique?

Portuguese is the official spoken language, but Makua (Mah-koo-ah) is the local tribal language where we are in Mozambique.                              top

What do you do for fun?  What do the children do for fun?

Soccer is the national sport, so the children enjoy that, as well as other games. No health problems caused by watching too much TV here!

The missionaries enjoy playing dominos or UNO, as well as reading books from their large library and getting together to watch one DVD per week as a special event. They also can visit the nearby ocean once a month for a wonderful, and inexpensive, scuba or snorkeling adventure!                                 top

What is the weather like?

In Mozambique, there are three seasons.

The "hot and dry" season is from September to December and the temperatures are usually from 90° to 100° F.

The "hot and wet" season is from December to April.  It is very rainy and temperatures range from 80° to 90° F.

The "cool season" is from May to August.  The temperatures range from around 50° F at night to in the 70's in the daytime.                                              top

How do you send e-mail from such a desolate area?

We use ""bushmail." -  Two car batteries hooked up to a HAM radio transmit e-mail from our laptop.  If writing to Brenda on the field, please remember to not send attachments or photos, and to delete the original text if forwarding an e-mail or replying to a message.  Every letter counts!  For those who are technically inclined, you can visit the BushMail website for more details.                          top
