THE VISION: FIVE STEP STRATEGY FOR THE FUTURE

REAL SOLUTIONS TO REAL NEEDS
TOGETHER, WE CAN BE WORLD CHANGERS

Step 1 FORMATION OF AN ORPHAN PREVENTION PROGRAM

Issue: Most children are orphaned in Africa because their mothers die from preventable or treatable medical problems such as AIDS, malaria, dysentery, TB & death in child birth.

Solutions:

I. EMPOWER THE WOMEN TO GROW THEIR OWN MEDICINES

  1. Train the local village women to grow & utilize medicinal plants that will decrease the death rate of mothers & children. Establish a medicinal plant growing center at our 2 orphan bases to raise cuttings & seeds for distribution to the local women.
  2. Train the local women to grow & prepare these plants for medicinal use.
  3. Train these women to diagnose & treat their children when they are sick.
  4. Train those interested in starting a business to prepare & sell these plants to others.

We have been given the training manuals & 5000 seeds to get this project started, but will need assistance in getting it operational on a large scale.

By growing 6 different tropical plants, we will be able to empower the local women to produce teas & powders that will:

  1. ASSIST MOTHERS WITH AIDS & TB by giving them a better quality of life (& thus not orphan there children as soon).
  2. CURE cases of dysentery
  3. CURE cases of Malaria
  4. PROVIDE RAPID RECOVERY for malnourished babies & breast feeding mothers. (thus reduce the number of babies that are orphaned or needing milk formula)

Materials needed:

IRRIGATION SYSTEM for large scale plant production at our mission station.
We have starter seeds, that will provide us with cuttings & seeds to distribute to the mothers for their own fields by November, the planting season in Africa.
Irrigation System Cost: $10,000

Water well to support the irrigation system: $3,000

Labor to install the irrigation system & maintain the fields for 1 year:
$3,000

Total: $16,000

II. CLEAN WATER PROJECTS

Water transmitted diseases are the greatest single killer in this area of Mozambique.
More than 600 children in our program were orphaned due to their mothers drinking dirty water & dying of a related disease (cholera or dysentery).

  1. PUR, water purification packets are being distributed as an interim
measure until water wells can be established in the villages where the children live. This supply must be replaced YEARLY at a cost of $6,500/year for the product.
  2. WATER WELL DRILLING
A Little Beaver Water Well Drilling Rig was donated to Orphans Unlimited & arrived at our mission station in January, 2008. Water well drilling is due to start in May, 2008. Water well sponsorships are needed for 50 water wells to be drilled over the next 5 years.

Cost of a water well drilling $1,000
Cost of hand pump, casing, cement is $1,500 Total cost for 1 water well: $2,500

Step 2. BREAKING THE POVERTY CYCLE

Issue: Current schooling in the area only goes through the 10th grade but there are few job opportunities for graduates. This creates a poverty cycle that is hard to break.

Solution: The following 2 programs are TOP PRIORITY FOR 2008 as we have many orphans graduating in 2008 with no job possibilities. You can help- see below!

Build a technical training center that includes a jobs creation/small business loan program for graduates.
Skills sets taught would include:

  • Auto/ maize mill mechanics- badly needed throughout the country.
  • Maize mill management- need management skills to run the maize mills when built.
  • Welding- leading to jobs creation with agricultural tools needed nationwide.
  • English as a 2nd language - interpreters badly needed nationwide.
  • Computer skills- computer classes for top students desiring jobs in government (which needs individuals with these skills now!), education or private businesses.
  • Construction- construction with hydroform press block manufacturing.
  • Education- pre-school teacher’s course (which we are in need of!).
  • Manual sewing- manual sewing machine classes for making inexpensive clothing for our orphans which is hard to get.
  • Agriculture- agricultural programs for the production of medicinal plants that can be sold nationwide
  • Small business management- money management and small business training will be required for graduation for all technical courses.

Already Provided:
2 Classrooms for the computer & English classes.
10 acres for the agriculture classes
Welding equipment already donated

Teacher's Salaries for Mozambican Masters in their field (Moz. top salary is $1,500/teacher/year X 3 teachers) $4,500/year

Computer classes:
8 student Computer training station: $3,500 (includes transportation from S. Africa)
Power source: 1 gasoline powered generator $2,000

TOTAL: $6,500

Step 3. JOBS CREATION TO FORM A FINANICALLY SUSTAINABLE PROGRAM.

Issue: The current efforts of the program outlined above are reliant on annual donations. The model should become a self-sustainable within
6 years and provide a successful working example to other areas of Africa.

Solution: The formation of Sustainable Micro Macro Enterprises (SMMEs) would provide financial sustainability for Orphans Unlimited and jobs for the graduates of the public schools and technical training facility. In this manner children could be brought up from young orphans to be fully independent and model citizens of their country. The goal would be to have each program become self-sufficient within 5-6 years of its formation.

The Needs:

  • MOBILE MAIZE MILL: $7,000
  • Trailer mount: $1,200

Total: $8,200

To provide a much needed service to the remote areas of the county.
Graduates from our auto mechanics (diesel engine) classes would gain experience & jobs training by working with this mobile mill project. Many of these areas have no way to mill their corn, & this could be used as a drawing factor for evangelistic & health teaching.

WHOLE CORN milled in a hammer mill is much more nutritious than the home processing method of beating the corn by hand. Much of the hand milled corn must be thrown away as the human body cannot absorb the hard shell unless is it pulverized by a mill. Milling corn is a way of helping to improve the general nutritional level of the village kids.

Provides jobs in each village, as local people would be trained to help run the mill when it visits their area.

This is one of O.U.'s projects that will eventually help the program become self-sufficient.

TRUCK GARDENING PROJECT FOR WIDOWS

Seeds, hand tools, watering cans, etc. $2,000

POULTRY PROJECTS FOR WIDOWS

Basic set up for breeding stock at O.U. farm $2,500

HOME BUILDING TEAMS with Hydraform bricks

Materials needed for basic building $2,000

Graduates from our builder's course will be encouraged to form their own teams & build housing on contract. They would purchase their bricks from the O.U. brick factory

Step 4. EXPAND OUR CURRENT ORPHAN PROGRAM TO REACH THE MULTITUDES OF NEEDY CHILDREN

Issue: Our current orphan program is only able to handle 1,900 children.
There are thousands of children needing help and Orphans Unlimited wants to assist as many children as possible. NOTE: Mozambique does not allow dorm type orphanage facilities. Foster care with Mozambican mothers is the only solution.

Solution: Raise the funding to expand the 2 orphan projects to reach the outer edges of the districts they are serving. In 2008 we now serve 1,900 orphans & widows.
Our goal for 2009 is to help an additional 600 children, bringing our total to 2,500 children.

The Needs:

Orphan Program (cost per child, includes foster care) $360/child/year
Goal: Assist 2,500 children
Cost: $900,000/year

A. Food/year:

  • Corn $55
  • Beans $25
  • Rice $13.00
  • Meat $25
  • Oil $17
  • Fruit/Veg. $11.00
  • Bath soap $5
  • Clothes soap $5
  • Tooth paste $5
  • Kerosene $5

FOOD TOTAL: $166.00

B. Foster Care: $ 84.00
C. Clothing $ 20.00
D. Bed $20.00
E. Bedding $20.00
F. Medical $10.00
G. School material $40.00

GRAND TOTAL : $360.00/year OR $30/month

Step 5. EXPAND OUR CURRENT MALNUTRITION REHABILITATION PROGRAM FOR BABIES & NURSING MOTHERS

Issue: We are presently assisting over 100 malnourished mothers per year with severely malnourished babies. Each week, all the mothers walk with their babies to the Nutritional Distribution Center to receive a high protein food supply (many walk 10 to 20 miles). Every November each mother is given seeds and tools to plant their field (required for sustaining household). All recovered families are dismissed from the program at harvest time each April. There are over a 1,000 additional malnourished mothers with babies needing our help throughout the district.

Solution: Raise the funding to establish 4 additional nutritional centers throughout the district to serve a total of 1000 mothers annually (a planned increase of 840 receiving needed assistance).

The Needs:

  • Corn flour $ 44.00
  • Hypo Plus $ 10.00 (nutritional cereal formulated for malnourished kids)
  • Reliv Milk $ 40.00 (formulated for malnourished kids)
  • Beans $ 17.00
  • Oil $ 17.00
  • Salt $ 2.00
  • Seeds $ 8.00
  • Tools $ 6.00 (hoe & machete for mother to get a new start)
  • Staff cost/child/yr. $ 6.00

FEEDING COST OF ONE MOTHER & CHILD: $150/year

GOAL: Assist 1000 malnourished children/year by Dec. 2009
Cost: $150,000 year

Construction of 4 food distribution warehouses in key areas of the county that will serve the estimated 2,500 orphans & 1000 malnourished babies & toddlers needing assistance.

4 tin barn warehouses with distribution centers (4meters X 20 meters)= $4,000 each
TOTAL: $24,000

Warehouse manager per site: $960/year= $3,840/year
