JULY 11, 2015 — GOD’S SPIRIT MOVING MIGHTILY
GOD’S SPIRIT MOVING MIGHTILY: 830 COME TO CHRIST IN 6 VILLAGES
In the last 14 days, Pastor Alberto, has been evangelizing in NAMUNO DISTRICT. Specifically the 6 remote (unreached) villages surrounding our SHIMWHEELY (Shim-wheel-ee) church. His new off-road motor bike is greatly paying for itself as it gets him to places where the gospel of Jesus Christ has never been heard. The numbers above reflect only ADULT attendance, as the children at each meeting were “too numerous to count”! The harvest is ripe and Jesus is moving in a big way in rural areas! UNUSUAL CHALLENGES Last week a huge swarm of HONEY BEES attached him as he rode back to Shimwheely from an evangelistic meeting in one of these villages. He scraped a tree, as he tried to out distance them, and, PTL, was not injured besides a few bee stings. Only minor damage was done to the mirror and light on the bike, so we are grateful that both man and bike survived the attack. Our bees are known for killing people here with the sheer mass of venom that a swarm can inject into a person. Keep Pastor Alberto in prayer for safety. COLD WEATHER: AN ADDED FIRE HAZARD WITH GRASS ROOFS Pastor Alberto called Friday afternoon to ask help as the Shimwheely Church’s Assistant Pastor’s house caught fire on Friday. They lost everything. The parents were harvesting food in their field, leaving the oldest child to look after the younger children at home. The oldest was cooking breakfast for the younger ones, when a heavy wind swirled by, picking up embers from the fire, and lofted them into the grass roof of their mud hut. MUD HUTS WITH GRASS ROOFS explode into flames faster than a dried up Christmas Tree! I’ve seen this first hand, and everything inside the mud hut is lost in about 10 minutes. YOUR GIFTS AT WORK: We are getting together a “care package” of essentials to help them out, and will be sending it to their location Sunday morning. Pastor Alberto will return with the truck for a few days brief visit to his family before returning to the bush to disciple these new believers. 30 TONS OF RICE IN THE BARN, WITH 117 TONS OF SUPER DRY CORN ON IT’S WAY Our trucks don’t rest during food buying time, and this week’s program was RICE (in the hull)! We buy it from the villagers, straight from their fields located under MAKU MOUNTAIN, just 12 miles away. Maku is the tallest mountain in all of Mozambique, and looks just like a huge set of Micky Mouse Ears. Busy week ahead for sure, but then the barns will be full. August begins distribution time, when all that has come in, will then go out to the orphans in need. Baby Sozinho and Foster Mother Fatima, came bundled up to receive additional baby food today. Sozinho now weighs 9.9 lbs (4.45kg) at 6.5 months. 51F AND WINDY, NOT FUNNY WHEN THAT IS BEDROOM CONDITIONS AT 4 A.M. Bundled Bunny is a better name for me these days as I usually wear 2 layers of clothes to bed, and put on a 3rd when getting up predawn. In Moz., we only have 2 “cool” months which have turned into RECORD COLD MONTHS this year. This week’s low set a new record with temps recorded at 51F (13C) INSIDE our homes, and a bitter 48F (12C) outside, made worse by a strong, steady wind. You may laugh, but we have no heat in our homes, since HOT is our norm. So huddling over a hot cup of tea, is the usual routine for me as I get up pre-dawn to have time with the Lord, and get ready for the day’s work. Taking a bath at midday is the norm, as it is too cold by sundown. So while you sweat in the USA, remember that Bush Bunny’s do NOT come with Snow Suits! Until next week! SOZINHO OUT OF HOSPITAL, NOW LIVING WITH US
FROM “BUSH BUNNY BRENDA”
DATE: JUNE 28, 2015 |
SOZINHO OUT OF HOSPITAL, NOW LIVING WITH US. SOZINHO with a healthier outlook as he has gained 2.2 lbs (1kg) in TWO WEEKS!
His mother was at the hospital when we picked him up Tuesday morning, June 23rd, but only stayed long enough to see what house he would live in. Most 16 year olds in Mozambique are very mature and nurturing towards infants (at least our girls are), so this teen is the exception. He is gaining weight and looking healthier, as you can see from his photo. When he first came, every bone in his body showed horribly and his legs and arms were just toothpicks. AMAZING every 3 hourly feedings can do over a 2 week period. We PTL that he survived his horrible ordeal and is now part of our family. CORN AT MELUCO The 36 tons needed to feed the 515 orphans in Meluco is now properly sacked, stacked, and in the barn. The neighborhood water well that serves over 500 families received a complete overhaul, thanks to Manuel and his team of experts. He said it looked like someone had tried to fix it, but did it wrong, and thus the WHOLE “innards” of the well had to be pulled and replaced. A 3 day job since they had to pull out, cut, reconnected the pipes with pipe unions, and then let it set for 2 days to dry. It’s a major job, but since the corn processing takes 2 days, the team was able to finish the job before they left on Thursday morning. BABY DANIEL RECOVERING FROM MUMPS TOGETHER WITH THROAT/EAR INFECTION DANIEL with mumps, comforted by Foster Mother Ernestina. June 28th, DANIEL, feeling much better, is standing at 1 year next to his new brother. SOZINHO (7 months), and Sozinho’s Foster Mother, Fatima. Good care brings life to our children. SIX MONTHS AGO, Daniel looked as skinny as Sozinho is now.
But thanks to much prayer and our great relationship with the Balama Dr. and hospital, we were able to get a prescription by phone, which could be filled in the next town (Montepuez, 30 miles/60km away). The Balama hospital was out of the much needed liquid antibiotic for his throat infection, but thanks to my “stash of baby meds”, and Capena’s “connections” at the Montepuez hospital, Daniel received all 3 medications he needed and is on the mend. DAWN’S SITUATION DAWN’S LAB WORK revealed a very weak immune system. We consulted with 2 doctors and the head of a private clinic in Pemba, but all three were in agreement that she should NOT live in a malaria area, and recommended she depart as soon as possible to prevent further illness. Since her arrival on April 8, Dawn has been a real “trooper”, but suffered through malaria, a respiratory infection, and the ever so deadly Dengue Fever (just last week). (Both malaria and Dengue are mosquito transmitted diseases that easily kill those with little resistance.) All 3 sicknesses occurred during an EIGHT WEEK period, revealing to all of us that something was not right, and thus the lab examination at the Provincial Hospital in Pemba. For her own safety, she will depart TOMORROW, July 29th. DAWN has been a GREAT HELP to me with her many management and organizational skills, and her departing is leaving a BIG HOLE in our staff. The children dearly love her as 6 days a week she spent her afternoons with them, teaching them English and many new games. She will be greatly missed by all of us and we know that if she decides to continue in missions, that God will guide her to a malaria free place where she can serve Him well. ABBIE WHEELER DEPARTS ON JULY 1ST School time soon approaches for Abbie, and she departs from here as scheduled. (We tried to get Dawn and Abbie on the same plane out of Pemba, but there were no seats.) Abbie filled in where ever needed, and received many hours of tropical medicine experience, (and long sleepless nights) by caring for both Caitlyn and Dawn during their sicknesses. She also worked daily with the children and helped our teenage boys improve their basketball skills. WE SINCERELY THANK BOTH THESE YOUNG LADIES FOR ALL THEY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO OUR PROGRAM. SEARCH IS ON FOR NEW HELPERS, AS BUSH BUNNY IS ONCE AGAIN THE ONLY MISSIONARY AT THE BALAMA SITE If you know of someone who will give a year, then have them contact us. Much thanks! HAPPY FATHER’S DAY
FROM “BUSH BUNNY BRENDA“DATE: JUNE 21, 2015 |
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL YOU WONDERFUL FATHERS OUT THERE!May your day be blessed with love and fun with your family.
BABY SOZINHO CONTINUES TO DEFY THE ODDS! Our little “fighter” gained over 1 POUND as of Wed. this week! Nothing like a little food to get the body going. The mother completely abandoned him at the hospital after 1 day, so it looks like he may stay permanently in our care. OK BY US! No child should be subjected to starvation by their own mother. He is still in the hospital, but Doctor Fumo says he should be released into our care by this Wed. (June 24th). He is still running a bit of a fever from his respiratory infection, and is receiving IV antibiotics to squash that infection. I got him a baby rattle in Pemba this week, as he now has the energy to begin grabbing things and holding on. Will keep you posted as he progresses.
Baby Daniel with his newest rattle toy. Now WALKING at 1 year with help to balance.
PASTORS FRED AND ALBERTO RECEIVE NEW MOTORBIKES (thanks to generous donors)
Pastors Fred and Alberto with their 2 new Off Road Bikes.
Their old bikes were literally being held together by wire, glue, and rubber cords, after 3 years of hard riding as they took the gospel to the multitudes in 2 districts. These new bikes are still 50cc motors, but the frames are made of much stronger materials with better shocks. THANK YOU to the many people who gave generously so that the gospel could go forth this year. Without new bikes it would not have been possible.
PASTOR ALBERTO TAKING THE GOSPEL TO 6 VILLAGES IN THE NAMUNO BUSH
Alberto with his bike, traveling to Namuno to spread the gospel in 6 very remote villages who are totally UNREACHED.
Our top evangelist, Alberto wasted no time getting started! He left WED. with his new “Bush Bashing Off Road Motorbike”, for Chimweely (Shim-wheel-ee) Village where he will be hosted by our Pastor Anife for the next 4 weeks. Pastor Anife is the largest of the 4 Aguas Vivas churches in Namuno District with over 150 members.
Together, they will be evangelizing and church planting until December (end of the dry season). They will also be interviewing young men to serve as AWANA leaders for these 6 villages. Once these 2 men are located, then AWANA Leader Carlitos Jorge will train them up and help organize the new Awana Clubs for Namuno.
36 TONS AND WHAT DO YOU GET? A lot of happy, healthy kids of course! Meluco’s corn is now in the barn.
7 ton truck loaded for Meluco trip. Work to include a complete overhaul on the neighborhood well near our mission AND processing 35 TONS of corn for long term storage.
Sylvai, our Meluco District Orphanage Manager and his crew of 2 men have been living in the bush for the last 3 weeks. Their goal: weigh, buy, and transport 36 TONS of corn to our Meluco warehouse for the 515 orphans living there. Our 7 ton truck, loaded with a 4 man team from Balama, as well as 4 TONS of beans and all that is needed to process this corn, will leave super early Monday morning for a 4 day stay in Meluco. THE WATER WELL that serves the mission station is broken, so this team has their work cut out for them. They will arrive midafternoon on Monday, unload, and then work on the water well. For without water, over 1000 people with suffer since the only other well is a long distance away.
Corn processing will begin early Tuesday morning. Note: Beans do not grow in the Meluco area, so each year, Balama provides the 13 TONS needed to give the children the protein needed to maintain healthy bodies.
DAWN HORGER HAS BEEN SICK SINCE LAST MONDAY with what we thought was malaria (her 2nd case in 6 weeks, which is not good).
She is still weak, but improving slowly. I will be taking her to see a Doctor in Pemba on Monday for a complete blood work up to make sure she is healthy enough to continue serving with us in Balama.
BLESSINGS, Bush Bunny Brenda Lange Dawn Horger Abbie Wheeler |
RESCUING BABY SOZINHO
FROM “BUSH BUNNY BRENDA”
DATE: JUNE 15, 2015 |
RESCUING BABY SOZINHO
Baby Sozinho, weighs only 7 lbs (3.2 kg) at his SIX MONTH mark this week!
His young teenage mother developed mastitis 4 months ago, and Social Services sent them to receive life-saving baby formula from us.
Sozinho weighed only 3kg (6.6 lbs) at 2 months, but with his mother’s lack of breast milk, poor infant growth is typical.
I noticed 3 weeks ago that he was very slow to gain weight on our 21% protein HYPO CEREAL, especially formulated for malnourished babies. Since he showed a good weight gain his first month, I immediately suspected the mother wasn’t feeding him, so she was counciled.
He presented 2 weeks ago IN SERIOUS CONDITION with a respiratory infection, had lost 0.5 POUNDS (250 gms) weight, and needed immediate medical attention. I immediately took mother and baby to the hospital. The Emergency Room staff gave him immediate treatment and would admit him to Pediatrics. But after I left, Sozinho’s mother ran away with the him, refusing treatment.
Not knowing where she lived, we had little hope of finding her. I prayed for that little one, for only Jesus could save him now.
PTL for Jesus heard our plea! Sozinho survived the last 7 days despite poor feeding and a respiratory infection!
This very young mother was obviously unconcerned for Baby Sozinho’s health, so when she walked in on June 11th, Capena and I took her immediately to meet with Social Services at the hospital. Social Services had to force her to give up Sozinho, who was immediately started on life saving antibiotics in the Emergency Room, and then Admitted under the care of 2 of our best foster mothers.
The Social Services Director and Capena then escorted the mother to her village to meet with her family and request custody of the baby for up to a year.
The family was VERY EAGER to comply, as they agreed this young 15 year old was not taking proper care of the infant.
Documents will be written up this week so that Sozinho remains in our care until he is a strong toddler.
The hospital doesn’t allow photos, but I will show you his CUTE LITTLE FACE with those BIG BLACK EYES as soon as he is released this coming week.
When I visited him this morning, all I could see were those 2 BIG BLACK EYES staring out from his hooded jersey.
WE ARE IN WINTER with 55 degrees our normal sunrise temperature INSIDE OUR HOUSES! No heat exists in our homes or in the hospital, so everyone has to dress warm.
Baby Sozinho’s body may be emaciated, but his mind is sharp, for he misses nothing going on around him. Our 2 foster mothers say he is an easy keeper as long as he is fed when he asks.
Babies who have been starved eat small amounts (less than 2 ounces/60ml) very frequently, and PANIC if not fed quickly.
CRYING uses up calories at a fast rate, so our mothers are under orders to NOT let him cry. Feed him without delay.
26 BABIES ARE IN OUR FORMULA PROGRAM AT PRESENT, and it looks like Sozinho will be our 3rd resident baby this year.
BABY EDNA, OUR YOUNGEST AT 7 MONTHS, ENJOYING HER FIRST FEAST
MONICA, BORN WITH A HEART DEFECT AND POOR SURVIVAL OUTLOOK , IS NOW IN PRE-SCHOOL!
DANIEL, 11 MONTHS, WITH A FACE THAT SAYS “I ATE MY LUNCH, SO WHERE ARE THE COOKIES YOU PROMISED!”
OUR FAMILY IS GROWING, and our older orphan girls DEARLY LOVE having new babies join us!
CHILDREN’S DAY, JUNE 1ST, CHILDREN BEING SERVED A RICE AND GOAT FEAST BY FOSTER MOTHERS
The babies who live with us provide our older orphan girls a great learning opportunity in baby care (besides being fun to cuddle). For in this country, girls without mothers to train them in good baby care have little opportunity to learn the proper skills.
TWO NEW AWANA PROGRAMS OPEN IN REMOTE VILLAGES
Saturday our AWANA team consisting of Carlitos Jorge, Nelson, and new assistant leader, Rufino, traveled to NTETE Village to meet with the children from the Assembly of God church. FIFTY THREE school age children dearly loved playing the games and hearing the story of creation. Next week, we expect a huge crowd, as these 53 little “advertisers” were told to invite all their friends. Ntete has over 2,500 children, so we plan to start programs in several areas of the village in order to keep the groups in manageable numbers.
SUNDAY, Carlitos Jorge met with village leaders and the children of NQUIDE Village (about 5km or 2.5 miles) down the road from Ntete. We plan to kick off that program next Saturday.
GOD’S WORD IS GOING FORTH! FOR THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD THE WAY IN THESE END TIME DAYS.

175 TONS OF CORN IN THE BARN IN 5 DAYS
175 TONS OF CORN IN THE BARN IN 5 DAYS
BEFORE OUR TRUCKS ROLLED OUT, we prayed for super natural strength, endurance, and safety for our Balama corn buying team. God answered in a BIG WAY! Our 100 man team broke 3 Balama records in 5 days. Unloading sacks weighing 165 to 176 lbs EACH. Amazing strength, balance, and coordination needed to control this kind of weight on your head. 1. TUESDAY: Team moved a record 830 sacks of corn in 8 hours. 650 sacks (42.5 TONS) weighed, sacked, and stored in the barn IN FOUR HOURS, with another 180 sacks (14.4 TONS) trucked in by 2 p.m. 2. THURSDAY: REPEATED TUESDAY’S RECORD by putting another 650 sacks in the barn! As the 100 ton pile gets higher, a staircase of sacks is built that the men must climb while carrying the sacks. These sacks only weigh 132 lbs. (60Kg), and only our strongest men are able to manage the climb to get it to the top. 3. FRIDAY, our teams reached deep into the bush to haul in another 400 sacks, leaving only 300 for Monday’s work load. Monday, we should complete our JUNE GOAL by having 200 TONS of corn in the barn. With the help of 2 large trucks, what use to take 3 weeks, now only takes 6 days!
Sometimes, a helping hand is needed from the guys on top. 100 TONS sits in this stack, ready for distribution to the orphans in July. FOOD BUYING CONTINUES THROUGH JULY This 200 tons of corn meets the distribution needs for 2,500 orphans from June to January. Another 100 tons of “super dry” corn is needed to feed the children from February to May. It will be ready by late July. Locally grown peanuts and rice will also be ready in early July, completing our yearly food buying needs for the children.
Widows enjoying the children’s feast last week. These 24 dedicated women and 2 men are the foster parents for the 104 orphans who are directly in our care in Balama. BUSH BUNNY TIDBITS We are very sad that Caitlin Pruitt contracted malaria last Friday, and must shorten her stay by flying out later this week. She is recovering well, but all concerned feel it best that she not risk a 2nd infection with only a few weeks left to her stay. Caitlin is attending RN School, and we want her to regain full strength before beginning the very busy semester she faces in August. Abbie Wheeler will complete her 6 week volunteer program with us in Balama. WORDS cannot express how much JOY our team feels at having completed another June corn buying season THANKS TO YOUR HELP. It takes ALL OF US working “hand in hand” to save the lives of orphans and widows. Some plant, some water, while others are sent to reap the harvest If any 3 of these steps are missing, then the harvest fails. Each person helping us provides a valuable piece of this process. Thanks to your prayers, love gifts, and volunteer helpers, God’s harvest of souls is coming forth in a mighty way in northern Mozambique. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH! NOTE: Our final licensing documents are once again before the National Social Service’s Committee in Maputo. We expect an answer in July. BLESSINGS, Bush Bunny Brenda Lange Dawn Horger Caitlin Pruitt Abbie Wheeler |

BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR THE ORPHANS — SUPER FUN
FROM “BUSH BUNNY BRENDA”
DATE: MAY 31 2015 |
BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR THE ORPHANS!
SUPER FUN! 106 ORPHANS IN OUR CARE ALL READY FOR A RICE AND GOAT FEAST FOR THEIR PARTY After bustling around all week preparing for corn buying, our staff decided to wrap up the month with our annual “CHILDREN’S DAY BIRTHDAY PARTY” on May 30th.
ABBIE, CAITLIN, AND DAWN GIVE OUT COOKIES AND GIANT SUCKERS, YUM ! EARNISTINE SERVES A FESTIVE MEAL OF RICE AND GOAT TO SOME OF OUR CHILDREN. Normally held on June 1st, National Children’s Day in Mozambique, we moved it up for an important reason. The younger children are out of school on Monday to celebrate this holiday, but our 11 high school students must attend classes. Couldn’t let them miss their own birthday party! (Since we don’t know most of the children’s true birthdays, all 106 of them celebrate together on this day.) Our Youth Pastors provided Christian music with the new sound system the children donated to the church. The children love to sing and dance to this music. Basketball and soccer games, went on simultaneous to girl’s competition jump rope, and sack races, while the younger children had a fun time on the swings and giant slide. In preparation for the party, all 106 orphans received new clothes which they proudly wore to the party. Our party feast included a goat and rice plate, followed by Birthday treats–packet of cookies, a balloon, and 2 giant suckers of different types. (bubble gum and yogurt) Yummy!
LITTLE DIXON, AGE FOUR, WAITED PATIENTLY AS THE LAST PERSON IN LINE, SO HE COULD HAVE HELP IN BLOWING UP HIS BALLOON. Needless to say, the 4 hour party was a great success! CORN IN THE BARN FOR MONDAY’S KICK OFF! The government has been super cooperative in letting us fetch food a few days early this year, since beans and corn are in short supply. Today, we weighed, and stored 300+ sacks (154lbs./70kg each) of corn so we can jump right in to processing it for storage early Monday. BUSY WEEK AHEAD, as we hope to buy and store 200 TONS of corn in our barn in the next 12 days. Yesterday, our staff and I handpicked 80 men to help us accomplish our goal. It will be a bit “corny” around here for the next 2 weeks, (counting corn sacks in our sleep), but the sacrifice is worth it. THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR HELP! Without the Orphans Unlimited Family of contributors, and our fabulous staff (both in the USA and Moz.) over 2,500 orphans and widows would suffer severe malnutrition that could kill them. Blessings to all of you! Bush Bunny Brenda Lange Dawn Horger Corn Crunching Visitors from Texas: Caitlin Pruitt Abbie Wheeler |
