HEIGHT OF THE HUNGER SEASON On Friday, April 20th, Grandparents Mariano and Assena walked 14 km (7 miles) carrying their 2 newly orphaned grandchildren on their backs to ask help from Social Services in Balama. The family was brought to us immediately for long term assistance. Severely malnourished, the hospital staff thought the 2 orphans were very young due to their small sizes. Their birth records showed the shocking truth! Little boy, Mateus, weighing only 5.5kg (12 lbs.) is 16 MONTHS OLD! As I held him in my arms, I felt like I was holding a doll made of feathers. His Sister, Zelia, in better physical condition than her brother, looked to be 3 years old, but is really 4! Children’s Director Anna dresses little Mateus. This size 12 month sweat suit swallows his little 16-month-old body. Their mother died on March 30th, 2018, after a long illness. The father died from unknown reasons just before Mateus was born in December, 2017. The grandparents, also very thin, were doing their best to help these newly orphaned children, but they had run out of food themselves. Their fields were washed away in the heavy flash floods that hit Balama District in Feb. and March. All four now benefit from your Love Gifts. They left us very happy with a new set of clothes for the children, as well as food to sustain the 4 of them until the next food give out on April 27th. THE LOVE OF JESUS AT WORK BECAUSE YOU CARE. 2018 CORN AND BEAN HARVEST Flash floods late in the growing season did severe damage to the corn and beans in many areas of Balama. This is a major blow financial blow to many farmers AND TO OUR CHILDREN, for we depend on their crops to feed over 2000 orphans in 2 Counties (Districts). The corn and bean harvest is expected to be average at best around our County (District). I’ll keep you updated in the coming weeks as the harvest numbers roll in. MUCH THANKS TO THE DONORS PROVIDING FOOD BUYING FUNDS, FOR THIS WILL BE A CHALLENGING YEAR FOR MANY CHILDREN. With your help, we will peak out our barns so we can help as many as possible. VICTORY SPONSORED CHILDREN’S HOME HAS WALLS! Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, OK is sponsoring a “2 bedroom expansion” with indoor eating area onto one of the orphans homes we built last year. The walls began going up last week, and the home will be ready for roofing in 10 days. Our brick layers are efficient, fast, and very good at what they do. Our new Victory home for orphans is making great progress. THANK YOU VICTORY for giving us a new home for our ever growing multitude of children. 16 BBC YOUTH MINISTERS WITNESS WAVES OF NEW CHILDREN (BBC=Bush Bikers for Christ, Youth Evangelistic Teams) 1. BBC 10 MAN/5 MOTORBIKE TEAM: minister to an average of 12,693 children/WEEK 2. BBC 4 man/5 day a week Bicycle Team (which began over 8 years ago) saw 2,439 NEW children come into their program in the last 3 months. The previous numbers were about 4,000 children/week in 10 villages. The new total is over 6,000/week! 3. Friday/Saturday, 2 man Bicycle Team reaching about 810 children/week in 2 unreached villages behind our mission station. The BBC Team is fueling up after long day in the Bush. THE BAWANA GAMES ARE NOW REACHING 19,503 CHILDREN PER WEEK IN 22 VILLAGES These “little sponges” learn a Bible Story and memorize a scripture AFTER running off some of their abundant energy playing really fun relay games. BRINGING IN GOD’S HARVEST IS A TEAM EFFORT THAT STARTS WITH YOU! Your Love Gifts provide motorbike fuel, bicycles, and the equipment/books needed for the BAWANA GAMES and BIBLE STUDY TIMES. These 16 young men do a great job of teaching these children God’s way to respect others, and team building skills. THEY ARE THE FUTURE GENERATION that will help build a better Mozambique. TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF THESE LITTLE ONES. BLESSINGS, BUSH BUNNY BRENDA LANGE AND THE BALAMA STAFF |

SYRAH/SODEXO SEND TREATS
Balama was honored with a visit from this country’s President on Thursday the 12th of April. President Nyusi was here to inaugurate the Syrah/Twigg Graphite Mine and the new Agriculture School that is just down the road from us. His helicopter’s pilot whisked him in and out with great skill between heavy rain storms that surrounded our area.
After his departure, our office manager received a call from leaders at the nearby graphite mine stating they had lots of nice TREATS left over from the inauguration and wanted to bless our children. Cake, fruit juice, apples, and other goodies were brought in and sparked an impromptu party enjoyed by all the orphans that afternoon.
And then the rains returned!
Oh well, the food was fabulous, and we are thankful that everyone traveled safely back to their homes.
The Ostrich House kids get a ride. Guaranteed giggles and smiles when Mama Brenda gives a ride to some of the preschoolers.
18 OF OUR YOUNGEST SEND THEIR LOVE TO YOU!
This smiling crowd gathered for a photo today for they are the orphans who attend our Little Disciples program each week to learn Portuguese, basic numbers and their ABC’S. Each day ends with a Bible story and devotions. When a camera appears, the foster mothers and teachers are not to be left out!
18 preschoolers send their love
Thought you would enjoy seeing our happy bunch which are a delight to us all. Truly a great group of God’s innocent ones who have a wonderful chance at a future thanks to your Love.
BABY SANTOS CAME HOME TODAY!
I went to the hospital today to check on this tough little guy, and met his Doctor in the parking area. SANTOS had completed his antibiotics and was ready for dismissal. PTL! God’s timing for sure!
We are to watch him closely for fever, but this little guy is on the road to recovery.
Now 15 days old, Santos is still quite tiny. His new family was thrilled to have him home, so I am sure he will receive the best care that their love can provide.
Baby Santos at home — Truly content with a smile to prove it
Thank you for your prayers and plz keep them coming, for we need him to pick up weight quickly. He’s spent his entire life just trying to survive. Now it is time for him to LIVE ABUNDANTLY in the love of JESUS.

EASTER MORNING BRINGS NEW LIFE TO OUR DOOR
A baby boy born in his mother’s home on Good Friday, lost his mother to complications that same night. Unable to afford milk, formula, or find a nursing mother to suckle the boy by Saturday night, the family took the baby to our nearest church. At 7a.m. Easter Morning, I was handed a cold, very dehydrated baby with an umbilical infection. He had had nothing to drink since his birth 36 hours earlier.
Granny Josephine holding Baby Santos.
Grabbing formula, and a baby bottle, I put in a call to the Balama Doctor. He met us at maternity, as did my nurse friend, Sister Ligia. For 3 hrs the three of us prayed and worked to get fluids into this 2.8 kg (6 lb.) Infant. A IV was not possible due to his severe dehydration, so we got him to sip small amounts of glucose and electrolytes via a syringe. Getting him warm, and hydrated finally produced a vein and Sister Ligia was able to start an IV for antibiotics to stop his umbilical infection. PTL!
By Noon, it appeared our little one had a good chance to live. As we walked out of maternity happy but tired, I asked his family for his name. They didn’t have one so I suggested Santos, A name in Portuguese meaning Holy, for he was born at noon on Good Friday.
The family agreed.
Two days later, Santos and his granny Josephine, came to stay with us for a few weeks. Our Doctor didn’t want Santos too far away until his infection cleared, and he was eating well.
Social Services visited Santos the next day at our orphan home and approved his stay. It was obvious that his care was too complicated for his Granny to handle, so our foster mothers began training her in the basics of bottle feeding a fragile infant.
Now 8 days old, Santos is alert and eating well. Your love gifts are at work, for it “takes a village” to raise an orphan.
Santo’ s 2 uncle’s, Granny, and his 5 siblings
NOTE: Santos has four sisters and one brother ages 2 to 12 living in Rovuma Village. Their father passed away a few months ago, so two uncles and their families have now taken in these 5 children. Two of our staff selflessly came in on Easter Morning to make an emergency food drop so these children would not go hungry.
YOUR LOVE GIFTS make this possible. Your gifts will also provide them an education and a chance at a brighter future. Our Rovuma Pastor has invited them all to church followed by Bawana Games on Sunday.
Granny has never been to a church or heard of Jesus before this week. Tomorrow her eyes will be opened when she sees what Praise and Worship to Jesus is all about. Granny has already heard much about Jesus from our mothers, and it is obvious her stay will provide much more for her than basic baby care.
FYI. Your love gifts are supporting 33 ORPHANED infants in our baby program at this time. An infant under 90 days cannot survive without formula, so we thank all of you for providing life to these innocent ones.
CHRISTMAS IN APRIL?
It’s a bird, not a plane, and it’s bringing our once a year supplies from southern Mozambique!
Ambassador Aviation pilot Kent make a a perfect landing on a dirt airfield.
Thanks to the Christian team at Ambassador Aviation, (name changed from MAF), we were blessed last Monday with a supply drop. It was great to fellowship a few minutes with missionaries from that area who brought their children for an up close look inside the plane. Networking with other Christians on the mission field is a key ingredient in the advancement of God’s kingdom.
It takes a whole team behind the scenes to help us rescue 1000’s of orphans.
Unloading while others standby to carry boxes to our truck
A BIG THANK YOU to Eric Dry, and his daughter Chanelle, who gave up their holiday time to bring the supplies to the plane in Inhambabe, as well as Pilot Kent and Ambassador Aviation for flying them the last leg of the journey.

BALAMA WOMEN’S GROUP VISITS ORPHANS
FOUR women, all Balama leaders in the nationally known OMM women’s group, visited all 5 of our orphan houses today. They were very pleased with our accommodation, foster parents, and the beautiful, polite children we are raising. One family of orphans won their hearts as the children broke out in a welcome song as these ladies entered the gate to their home.
UNABLE TO WALK AT 2 YEARS
Orphan Delfina lives in a remote village visited weekly by our BBC Motorbike Team. Malnourished from birth, this little one had never walked when our team learned of her 3 months ago. With lots of prayer and a weekly drop of food carried in on 2 bikes by the BBC team, Delfina surprised everyone when she stood up at last week’s church meeting and began to walk!
“THE CHILDREN shall lead them” takes on new meaning to the new believers in this village who are struggling to understand how faith in Jesus heals. Delfina listened and acted on what she heard. Don’t let your brain block what your heart knows is truth.
ORPHANED TWINS ENTER FEEDING PROGRAM
It’s been a busy week as we received 4 new babies into our milk formula program. Each time an infant is brought to us, it reminds our staff just how fragile life can be.
Twins spells double trouble, especially if 1 baby is not in the proper position at birthing time. Six months of formula gives these innocent ones a chance at life.
Your love gifts are VITAL to this program, so plz keep these precious babies in your prayers. We have 32 babies needed formula at $5/can/week x 24 weeks. ($120 raises an infant to 6 months.)
PASTOR FRED’S 30 STITCHES REMOVED
At Dr.‘s orders, Sister Ligua (Lisha) from the Balama hospital did the deed. His post-op cast is mostly open down the front. In 2 more weeks FRED returns to his surgeon in Nampula city for cast removal.
Thank you to all who blessed him with prayer and love gifts to expedite his recovery. He will soon be able to walk again on his own 2 feet.
FOLLOWING JESUS MEANS MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO THE LIVES WE TOUCH.

“BUSH BUNNY BRENDA” BLOG: MARCH 10, 2018
BBC PASTOR FRED HAVING MAJOR LEG SURGERY BBC Pastor Fred is the victim of a motorcycle accident which occurred while he was on the road to play BAWANA GAMES with the children in a remote village. A motorcycle came around a blind curve at a high speed in the wrong lane, hitting our motorcycle broadside. BBC LEADER and bike driver Carlitos Jorge swerved to avoid collision, but there was not enough space or time. Sadly, Pastor Fred’s leg took the full blow of the front wheel from the other motorcycle. Carlitos and the other driver escaped with only minor injuries. After 10 weeks with 3 casts and 5 hospital visits, Doctors have decided that Fred’s leg will not heal without surgery. With limited resources in our area, his 2 doctors recommended we transfer him to a private hospital in Nampula. This hospital has the needed equipment and a good orthopedic surgeon, but it means private pay. Fred’s leg bones are in at least 3 pieces that I can see from the X‑rays, meaning it needs plates and screws to repair it. Not an easy job. Hospital expenses plus 2 doctors and an 8 day follow up care is estimated to cost about $3,000. Surgery is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sunday, March 11th (12 a.m. Central time in USA). $1,667 had to be paid yesterday in order to get him on the surgery list. The balance is due in 8 days which is the estimated post op dismissal date. Pastor Fred still smiling as he faces major surgery Finding that kind of money on such short notice meant I had to take it from our Children’s Emergency Medical Fund. That fund is now a bit anemic, but no surgery meant a talented Children’s Pastor would be crippled for life. Much prayer is needed for his complete and speedy recovery.
Office Manager Capena drove Pastor Fred to Nampula and made all the arrangements for his surgery. Capena and I are a powerful team. Together we keep this mission moving forward for JESUS. SCHOOL EXAMS IN PROGRESS Our 86 students are doing well in school, and the proof will be in next week’s test results. For those new to our program, we have 98 children living in our Balama foster homes with 4 living in our Meluco District Foster home. We stand by the rule that if you live here, you go to school. (School is optional here.) Our 3 to 5 year olds get a head start on school by attending our Little Disciples Activity Program 3 mornings a week. The 3 leaders teach them Portuguese through songs, playing games, and art activities. I am truly touched when these precious little ones greet me in English. It gives me great joy when I have time to teach a few words of English to them. I call them my “little sponges”, for what they hear and see, THEY DO! Our teenagers learning the importance of a weed-free field. Farming is an essential life skill in Mozambique. BBC TEAMS RAINED OUT 2 DAYS THIS WEEK March usually brings only light rains, so having 4+ INCHES (100+mm) this week caught all of us by surprise. With 6 inches (15 cm) of mud covering all the soccer fields, BAWANA GAMES had to be postponed twice this week. It just now stopped raining as I write this and the sun is peeking through the clouds. The BBC motorbike teams should be able to hit the trails TOMORROW! Blessings and thanks so much for your fervent prayers for Pastor Fred and our faithful Youth Pastors raising up God’s children in His Word! Bush Bunny Brenda Lange And the Balama Staff |

BBB, 1 OF 215 MILLION TOUCHED BY BILLY GRAHAM At age 8, my family took me to a Billy Graham Crusade in Houston, TX. My heart was heavily impacted as I listened to Billy Graham talk about Jesus with such easy to understand words and stories. Everything I’d been taught as a toddler about JESUS suddenly came together like pieces of a puzzle. I begged and cried to go down during the alter call, but my parents felt I was too young. Billy Graham’s words never left me, and I now know that the Lord Jesus knew my heart and accepted me as his own that very day. A child is never too young to realize that Jesus is the Truth, the Way, and the Light that leads to heaven. Billy Graham’s life is a powerful testimony of what 1 person’s dedication to Jesus can obtain. 215 MILLION SOULS WORLD WIDE! BEYOND COMPREHENSION! Billy Graham wanted all of us to realize 1 very important fact. EVERY PERSON has the ability to impact the world for Jesus through our testimony and our stories of faith in HIM. Mr. Graham’s desire was that ALL BELIEVERS IN JESUS go forth and impact the world for Christ. THE TIME TO START IS NOW! THE GREATEST GIFT IN THE WORLD Can’t be bought Can’t be earned Can’t be received through church membership ONLY REPENTANCE OF OUR SINS, AND A PROFESSION OF FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST, OPENS THE DOOR TO ETERNAL LIFE WITH OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. Keep it short and simple, and let God’s words flow from your heart. There is nothing complicated about receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior. FRUIT FROM THE BALAMA “VINE” GIVES BACK BY SAVING LIVES JAMIRA, a widow and young mother of 4, just received 3 orphans when her sister died. Jamira grew up right here in our Balama Foster Care Program! SHE’S FAMILY and we are very proud of her efforts to save the lives of the 7 children in her care. It proves that the “mother’s training” she received while living here “stuck”, and she is using it to the best of her ability. But 7 children’s clothing needs alone are more than Jamira earns doing odd jobs near her home. We are thrilled that the gifts from the Syrah / Twigg employees provided these children with school materials this year. We immediately placed the entire family in our weekly food program, and used the last of our uniform material to make them school uniforms. Meeting the rest of their needs (shoes, beds, blankets, cooking pots, plates, etc.) must come from a sponsorship. With 3 sponsorships ($90/month total), we can provide all 7 children with what they need to continue school and stay healthy through good nutrition and sanitation. Hand in Hand with the Least of These provides a future that is beyond these 7 children’s imagination. Orphans Fatima (age 10), Arminda (age 12), and Jorge (age 13), all need a sponsor for $30/month. Jamira is in the middle with her own children on the right. Blessings to all of you! BUSH BUNNY BRENDA LANGE AND THE BALAMA STAFF |

PTL, BABY ARMANDO SURVIVES MALARIA!
Baby Armando, 7 weeks old, miraculously overcame his malaria, and was released from the hospital Monday, (Feb. 13th). In addition to the malaria, he was fighting an upper respiratory tract infection. This, too, is now GONE after prayer and antibiotic treatment at home. My thanks to all of you for your prayers for this little guy, and to the 2 foster mothers who alternated staying with him at the hospital, providing excellent 24 hour care.
Baby Armando taking a welcomed nap after leaving the hospital.
PREMATURE BABY CONSTANTINO NEEDS OUR PRAYERS.
Weight: 1.4kg (3 lbs) at 19 days of age, means this little tyke needs to feed and grow. He is totally healthy, just very small since his mother has no breast milk due to a breast abscess. With the Lord’s help, our staff will help these concerned parents to provide all that this little one needs.
Tiny Constantino. Note that the bottle covers more than half his body.
TINY TWIN GIRLS NEED URGENT PRAYER
The twin’s father and his best friend rode 18 km (11 miles) TODAY on a borrowed bicycle from Mavala (The Mango Tree Church Village), to BEG a can of milk for his 6 day old infants. The man’s wife perished during their birth on Jan. 12th, leaving these 2 tiny girls of 1.8 kg (3.8 lb) and and 1.7kg (3.7 lb) in their grandmother’s care. One was born just BEFORE midnight on Jan. 11th in Balama, and the other an hour later in the Montepuez hospital (60 km/36 miles away), due to complications. I gave them a can of formula and a 100mts. ($1.50 or R18) so the grandmother and father could ride the local “chapa” (taxi) on Monday to bring them to Balama. A family member must present the twins at Social Services in the Balama Hospital for proper registration. Once this is done, we will provide these 2 little girls with formula and baby clothes for the father cannot afford the market prices.
NOTE: The father received 2 cans of baby formula and 2 baby bottles from the Montepuez hospital to get them started. We are so happy that this man “did what it takes” to provide for his 2 little girls BEFORE they ran out of milk. So many wait until the milk is gone, causing the baby to suffer greatly.
FACT TO REMEMBER: When an infant cries, it burns lots of calories, and thus, loses weight. Tiny infants cannot afford to cry, for they have no body weight to lose. Keeping them well fed and happy helps them gain weight at a faster rate.
YOUR LOVE GIFTS AT WORK! PROVIDING BABY FORMULA, BOTTLES, AND BABY CLOTHES SAVES MANY INNOCENT LITTLE LIVES.
UNWELCOMED RAT EATER MEETS HIS DEMISE!
This morning our brick layers were walking past our kitchen, when they spotted a 60 cm (2 ft.) ADDER (rattlesnake family) as it tried to cross in front of them. Our worker’s motto is: “the only good snake is a dead snake”. In the blink of an eye, one of the bricklayers grabbed the 12 foot (4 m) bamboo we keep at the kitchen for this very reason, and beat it to death as it tried to climb our sand pile.
Adder meets bamboo rod and loses, even in soft sand.
Adders are not fast moving, but they “strike like lighting” with great accuracy and their fangs full of deadly venom. Never take any snake for granted in Africa for 99.9% of them can spit farther and move faster than you can react. Keeping one’s eyes open, especially at dawn and dusk, can save your life.
Blessings,

MIRACLE HEALINGS IN NAMARA DISTRICT
Our 2 Pastors in Namara District, 24 miles (40 km) to the south of Balama, reported 4 miracle healings after praying for the sick in different locations.
Pastor Alberto reports healings and 25 new believers in Namuno churches
A man who suffered from Bilharzia (parasite infestation of the bladder causing bleeding and massive loss of energy) showed no blood in his urine and regained strength over the next 3 days following prayer! Medical fact: Even with proper medication, Bilharzia is a tough parasite to eradicate and the bloody urine does not disappear within 3 days after treatment.
Two others were delivered from chronic back pain and stomach problems, while a 3rd person became pain free after suffering chronic headaches for 5 years! Praise Jesus for all of this, and I pray for a greater anointing on these 2 Pastors as they continue to evangelize in this very remote area.
TWO INFANTS HOSPITALIZED WITH MALARIA THIS WEEK
Monday early a.m. found us urgently admitting Baby Armando, 6 weeks old, with malaria. This is serious as babies this age do not weigh enough to use the normal treatments, so he had to be given IV Quinine. He is still in hospital with a positive malaria smear after 4 days of treatment.
On Tuesday afternoon, Baby Jacinta, 5 months old, was also admitted for a positive malaria smear. She weighs just over the 5kg (11 lb.) limit, and could receive the normal IV treatments. Jacinta was released Thursday afternoon to continue oral treatment at home for the next 3 days.
Both of these babies came to us in a very fragile, malnourished condition, which decreases their resistance to every sickness. Please keep them both in your prayers this week.
Malaria is on the increase in our area due to the rains slacking off in the last 2 weeks, allowing the mosquitos to breed and flourish. All our children and mothers sleep under mosquito nets, but anyone outside after 4pm can become infected as that is when the mosquitos begin feeding. We thank you for your prayers for all our children for malaria is rampant throughout all of Africa in the rainy season.
Crossed a river and walked 5 miles with his village orphans to fetch their school supplies and buy their shoes.
Precious Sozinho, 3 years old, demanded a backpack for preschool.
WORK CONTINUES DESPITE HEAVY RAINS
Just as the US Post Office has their motto about delivering mail in any weather, I believe our BBC and construction teams deserve the same. THROUGH MUD, RAIN, AND DARK OF NIGHT, THE LORD’S WORK MUST BE DONE WITH MIGHT!
Our TREES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. The men reaping God’s harvest.
Our BBC and construction teams of construction workers faithfully arrive daily before 5 a.m (still pitch dark) for our daily devotions.
We do action songs, hear a message from God’s Word, then pray a blessing over all of them. The sky lightens by the time we are done, and all go off to their respective jobs.
Note: Construction made great progress as we continued pouring floors, built a bathroom, and mounted window frames at the new dorm this week.
Blessings,
Bush Bunny Brenda Lange
