OUR THANKS goes to all the employ­ees at the main office in Perth, Aus­tralia who con­tributed cloth­ing and shoes to our chil­dren.  These are only a few of the chil­dren who ben­e­fit­ted because school hours made it impos­si­ble to get them all in 1 photograph.

Their faces say it all, and know your efforts in doing this are great­ly appre­ci­at­ed.  We also say THANK YOU to the men who vol­un­teered to car­ry the suit­cas­es as they trav­eled from Perth to their work site in Balama.

 

 

 

AWANA LEADER, BERTINO, WEDS ESPERANCA (HOPE)

All parent’s know that time flies when rais­ing chil­dren.  It seems like yes­ter­day when 10 year old orphan, Esper­an­ca (Hope), joined our fos­ter family.

Last Novem­ber, these 2 asked per­mis­sion to mar­ry, but Esper­an­ca was 17, so the gov­ern­ment told her to wait till she was 18.

Five months lat­er, and a few months shy of her 18th birth­day, our impa­tient Esper­an­ca once again request­ed to mar­ry BERTINO, our AWANA LEADER at the Bala­ma base.

After much prayer and sev­er­al meet­ings, the gov­ern­ment final­ly agreed for most girls in this cul­ture mar­ry by the time they are 16.

And no, she was not preg­nant, just a young girl deeply in love.

Last Sun­day, March 12th,  this excit­ed cou­ple were hon­ored by our com­mu­ni­ty, who danced and sang as they walked them to the church for the wed­ding ceremony.

You will notice their solemn faces, for tra­di­tion in this cul­ture states that SMILING dur­ing the cer­e­mo­ny means you are NOT SHOWING MATURITY and ARE NOT tak­ing the mar­riage seriously.

After a 1 day hon­ey­moon, these new­ly­weds returned to hon­or Esparanca’s promise to con­tin­ue her edu­ca­tion.  That was the only stip­u­la­tion made in order for her to leave our home.   The short hon­ey­moon was a must for she had school exams this week.

NEW AWANA TEAM ON THE MOVE

ped­aled off this morn­ing to take the news of Jesus via AWANA GAMES to a for­got­ten vil­lage behind the moun­tain 3 miles east of our mis­sion sta­tion.  With severe rains last night, we all thought we’d have to can­cel,  but these men were deter­mined to go.

They returned sev­er­al hours lat­er, a bit mud­dy, but SMILING as they touched the lives of 102 chil­dren and 16 adults with the sto­ry of Creation.

The har­vest is ripe, and there is no time to lose, for our Lord will be return­ing soon.

ADDITIONAL 75 ORPHANS SINCE OCTOBER DEPLETES OUR FOOD STORE

In the 17 years I’ve been in Bala­ma, I’ve nev­er had to admit so many mod­er­ate­ly mal­nour­ished chil­dren into our Thurs­day food pro­gram.  Since last Octo­ber, the num­bers have been slow­ly creep­ing upwards until it has now reached 75 new admis­sions need­ing food each week.

These 5 chil­dren and their grand­par­ents, whom we admit­ted last week, are a prime exam­ple of the many oth­ers we have had to admit in the last 5 months

To meet this addi­tion­al need we are now milling more than 140 sacks of corn/month.  (Oct. milling was only 105/month).

I must ask your for­give­ness for let­ting this need slip up on me, but our sack count shows that our corn sup­ply will be deplet­ed by April 20th, leav­ing 5 weeks to go before nor­mal corn buy­ing starts.

We have enough funds remain­ing from our 2015 food bud­get to cov­er 75 sacks, but not enough to cov­er the remain­ing 100.

A farmer has agreed to sell us the need­ed 175 sacks of fresh corn at $16/sack. (April 20th is way too ear­ly for dried corn, as it is still on the stalks in the field.)

I thank you now for any help you might be able to give us so these chil­dren will have food dur­ing May.

STREET CHILDREN MAKE THEIR WAY TO SUNDAY SCHOOL

SUNDAY SCHOOL DRAMA HELPS CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR SALVATION

Last Sun­day, Berti­no (play­ing Jesus on the left) and Daude (play­ing Satan on the right), gave a very effec­tive les­son to the many new faces in our Sun­day School Class.  Many of the chil­dren did not know about the need for Sal­va­tion through Jesus to reach heav­en, so this illus­tra­tion brought the point home.

The les­son was sim­ple:  No one can stand with 1 foot try­ing to “find” Jesus and 1 foot in the world serv­ing Satan.

The more the boy sinned, the fur­ther the bas­kets were pulled apart as he grew older.

Each man must CHOOSE JESUS or fall into the “pit of hell” when he dies.

Choos­ing JESUS is the only way to VICTORY!

THE LESSON MADE IT’S POINT! 

 For 30 hands went up after­wards to receive Jesus!

The “eye gate” is a pow­er­ful tool, for it is by see­ing an illus­tra­tion that we learn the fastest (both the right things, and sad­ly the wrong things too).

REVEALING JESUS through visu­al lessons AND OUR ACTIONS OF LOVE, is what draws the chil­dren to HIM.

My great­est reward is in train­ing up Youth Lead­ers to bring JESUS to the children

MUD HUT COLLAPSES DURING MASSIVE RAINS LAST SATURDAY NIGHT—ALL CHILDREN SAFE

Last week, on Sat­ur­day, I told you that the Provin­cial (State) Social Ser­vice Direc­tor had noti­fied us of the 5 mem­ber “Child Head­ed House­hold” who need­ed full sup­port from our pro­gram as their mud hut was in poor con­di­tion.  We received the request late Fri­day after­noon, just as a heavy rain storm hit.

Rain poured down caus­ing mas­sive flood­ing for the next 36 hours dump­ing 6.5 INCHES (163mm) of rain on Balama.

I spent the night pray­ing for all our orphans, their homes, our food ware­hous­es, and oth­er build­ings, for water ran 6 inch­es deep every­where I looked.

The already com­pro­mised mud hut of these orphans col­lapsed on Sat­ur­day night.  NO ONE WAS HURT thanks to quick think­ing Emelia, the 19 year old young lady who heads this house­hold.  She was able to get the kids out BEFORE their hut col­lapsed.  They spent a mis­er­able night in their neigh­bors kitchen, as many mud huts all over Bala­ma went down dur­ing this storm.

EMILIA and her fam­i­ly just arrived at our house last Sun­day morning.

Sun­day, at 5 a.m., I sent AWANA Youth Pas­tor Car­l­i­tos Jorge by bicy­cle to their house to check on these chil­dren.  When he came back say­ing their house was total­ly destroyed, I orga­nized a group of men to help them car­ry what they could sal­vage to the main road.  Our dri­ver, Gen­i­to, fetched this fam­i­ly and their belong­ings with our 4 wheel dri­ve Land Cruis­er.  We gave them emer­gency refuge in a large emp­ty room in our Fos­ter Father’s home next to the Boy’s Dorm.  On Mon­day, Feb. 8th, Emelia, her 2 small chil­dren, and her 3 orphan broth­ers, will move in with one of our fos­ter moth­ers who has a large vacant room at her house.

(NOTE:  A teenage girl with­out par­ents can eas­i­ly be seduced by a man, for she has no one to guide her.  Such is the sad case of Emil­ia.  This week, she began receiv­ing dai­ly coun­sel­ing from Anna, our Orphan/Foster Moth­er Super­vi­sor.  By liv­ing with a respon­si­ble Fos­ter moth­er, Emil­ia will learn what her moth­er would have taught her about child care, and we will add to that how to become a right­eous woman in the eyes of our Lord.)

It will take a few months, but our build­ing team is col­lect­ing huge fence posts and bun­dles of bam­boo in order to build Emilia’s fam­i­ly a house on the only remain­ing vacant lot the church owns.  We looked all week, try­ing to buy a mud hut in our area, but none exists.  The “Pao Peeky” type build­ing (sink­ing fence posts deep in the ground at 1 foot/30cm inter­vals, then tying them togeth­er with bam­boo and mud) makes stronger walls than mud brick, and is the only type of hous­ing that can be con­struct­ed in the rainy season.

Our big fam­i­ly is grow­ing!  We give thanks to JESUS for answer­ing our prayers to keep these chil­dren safe. 

Emelia’s 3 broth­ers are super excit­ed about get­ting to go to school with uni­forms, books and a new back pack!  Even with all Emelia has endured, she has qual­i­fied to enter into the 6th grade.  At 19, she will now get to con­tin­ue her edu­ca­tion for the fos­ter moth­er will be able to watch over the chil­dren while she is in school each after­noon from 12 noon to 5pm.

Again we extend our thanks to our friends in Wichi­ta, KS for their gen­er­ous gift that is mak­ing pos­si­ble this

SCHOOL STARTS ON FEB. 8TH!

FERNANDO is so proud and hap­py to have his own new school sup­plies. THANK YOU to his faith­ful spon­sor church. That hap­py, healthy smile is so beautiful.

ATUMANE ®, and assis­tant LUIS (L) com­plete the last of the 60  school uni­forms on their ped­al pow­ered Singer Sewing machines. Fab­ri­ca­tion begins in Novem­ber, as it is time con­sum­ing work.

Today broke with a beau­ti­ful sun­rise, and found our team orga­niz­ing 2  tables full of school sup­plies, back packs, school uni­forms (made at our base on foot ped­al Singer Sewing machines by our sewing team of Atu­mane and Luis).  It was a busy 3 hours, but all 60 school age orphans received every­thing from note­books to pen­cil sharp­en­ers THANKS TO YOUR GENEROUS LOVE GIFTS!

AUSTRALIAN MOM SENDS SCHOOL SHOES TO OUR CHILDREN

Down the road, about 6 miles from our Bala­ma Mis­sion Base, an Aus­tralian com­pa­ny is set­ting up a huge graphite mine.  Their man­age­ment staff dropped by this week, sur­pris­ing us with a suit­case full of shoes!

Alex, wife of Peter, the health and envi­ron­ment man­ag­er at the mine, has tak­en us under her wing.  The mine staff from Aus­tralia works on a rota­tion sched­ule, so as they fly from Aus­tralia to Bala­ma, Alex has the men bring a suit­case full of nice shoes and cloth­ing for our orphans as part of their baggage.

The bag we received 2 days ago con­tained shoes for 16 of our orphans!  Those chil­dren were so excit­ed!  The 48 chil­dren who didn’t receive shoes were tak­en imme­di­ate­ly to buy shoes at the Bala­ma mar­ket by 5 mem­bers of our staff. They just returned over­flow­ing with joy­ous laugh­ter, for I could hear them com­ing long before they arrived at my house to show me their new shoes.

Provin­cial Direc­tor, Maria Isabel Raimun­do, greet­ed us with a warm smile and cheer­ful words as she walked into our mis­sion sta­tion on Wednesday. 

 

Her heart for the chil­dren was clear­ly vis­i­ble, as we were told in prepa­ra­tion for her vis­it, that she had no desire to see paper­work, but want­ed to meet all the chil­dren and the fos­ter mothers.

Direc­tor Maria is pre­sent­ed with a wel­com­ing gift by nine year old Felismina.The gift is a localal­ly made bas­ket wood­en spoon, an agenda,and a wildlife calandar.

Assis­tant Direc­tor, Guil­herme Dos San­tos, receives his gift from sev­en year old Angel­i­ca. Guil­herme worked hand in hand with us to expe­dite our licens­ing last year.

Tech­ni­cian, Emil­ia Muzi­la, recives her gift from four year old Orten­cia. All three of the girls who pre­sent­ed gifts came to us as babues and are blos­som­ing into beau­ti­ful young ladies.

 

True to her word, she spent all but 15 min­utes of her 2 hour vis­it talk­ing with the moth­ers and chil­dren, vis­it­ing 4 of our children’s homes, and ask­ing non-stop ques­tions of every­one she met.  Only 15 min­utes was spent in our office for her sum­ma­ry, and that was most­ly to com­pli­ment us on a job well done!  She rec­om­mend­ed a few minor changes in one of the homes, before stat­ing how thrilled she was to meet all of us and see first-hand how our pro­gram func­tions.  She informed us that she looked for­ward to her next vis­it, as she plans to return in the dry sea­son.  It rained 2 INCHES (50mm) the night before her vis­it, giv­ing her a real taste of just how mud­dy Bala­ma can get in the rainy season.

My entire staff “Praise the Lord” for hav­ing sent such a won­der­ful­ly com­pas­sion­ate lady to over­see all orphan pro­grams in our state.

 

RAIN EXCEEDS 350 mm (14 inch­es) IN LAST 15 DAYS!

The gov­ern­ment was not exag­ger­at­ing when they put out the “orange warn­ing” on Jan. 15th.  It is pour­ing buck­ets as I write this, as we received 100 mm (4 inch­es!) of rain in the last 28 hours and it is still pour­ing down hard.  Keep us in prayer, and espe­cial­ly those 5 chil­dren in the sto­ry above, as they have not agreed to leave their house yet.  Our plan was to get them to a safer loca­tion on Mon­day, as they will have no choice but to move if this storm destroys their hut.  I plan a per­son­al vis­it to see them on Sun­day, as this may turn into an emer­gency res­cue as this storm is quite fierce and shows no signs of let­ting up!

(Now you know why Jesus said don’t build your house on the sand, and that goes for mud huts built in low lying areas also!)

 

CHILD HEADED HOUSEHOLD OF 5 ORPHANS NEEDS RESCUED

After leav­ing our pro­gram, Direc­tor Maria was tak­en to vis­it 2 of the fam­i­lies liv­ing in oth­er areas who receive food assis­tance from our program.

One of those fam­i­lies is a “child head­ed house­hold” of 5 orphans, with the old­est teenage girl act­ing as “moth­er” to her sis­ters and broth­ers.  We tried to get them to come live with us last year, but they refused.  Our help­ing hand then pro­vid­ed repairs on their mud hut in the dry season.

Unknown to us, the exces­sive rain (12+ inch­es in last 10 days) and high winds have bad­ly dam­aged their hut dur­ing this last week.

When the Direc­tor returned home on Fri­day, she sent us an e‑mail request­ing max­i­mum assis­tance for these 5 orphans.  (new mud hut, clothes, school uni­forms, school mate­ri­als, beds and blan­kets).  Most of their items have been dam­aged or destroyed due to a bad­ly leak­ing roof.

Thanks to a spe­cial Christ­mas gift from a Wichi­ta, Kansas Com­pa­ny, the mon­ey need­ed to orga­nize this mas­sive type of help for these orphans is already in the mail.

I’ll keep you post­ed, as this “res­cue” is ongo­ing this entire week as we orga­nize a new place for them to live.  (Note:  Build­ing with mud brick in the rainy sea­son is impos­si­ble, so we are try­ing to orga­nize a hut near us.)

SPECIAL NOTE:  In my 2015 end of the year report, I failed to men­tion that dur­ing my 17 years here in Bala­ma we drilled 15 water wells which are ALL still func­tion­ing, and have com­plete­ly reha­bil­i­tat­ed or repaired over 200!

My thanks goes out to all those who con­tributed to this mas­sive life-sav­ing pro­gram which pro­vides clean drink­ing water to most of the pop­u­la­tion of 2 Dis­tricts (coun­ties).  That’s an esti­mat­ed total of over 200,000 peo­ple whose health is bet­ter because of your love gifts.

OH, THE RAINS CAME DOWN.….…

RAINS CONTINUE TO POUR DOWN, BUT WIDOW’S ROOF BACK ON!

Non-stop rains may slow us down, but my car­pen­ters and brick lay­ers worked long hours in the rain this week to get the new roof secured in place.

Repairs con­tin­ue on the 4 hous­es that had dam­age to out­er walls.  Still to be re-roofed is the con­struc­tion stor­age ware­house, which is leak­ing, but stay­ing in place with heavy bricks.  Thanks to a great friend in Bro­ken Arrow, OK, we were able to buy the tin sheets and bags of cement need­ed for all this work.

Thank you for all your prayers dur­ing this time of tri­al, for old “smut­ty face” (dev­il) is not lik­ing all the evan­gel­i­cal work we are doing. Even in the RAINY SEASON, we are reach­ing over 5,000 chil­dren a WEEK with the Gospel and dis­ci­ple­ship train­ing via the AWANA program.

BLACK MAMBA PAYS BUNNY A VISIT  (Praise report, angels watch­ing over me.)

When the roof attack didn’t stop us, “smut­ty face” sent me a 30 cm (1 foot) long, shiny baby black mam­ba to vis­it me in my bed­room!  That was the only size that could slip under the screen door into my room.  (That ¼”/1cm space has now been closed off!)

I woke up Tues­day at 4a.m., rolled out of bed with my flash­light, and imme­di­ate­ly spot­ted the lit­tle crit­ter under a box at the head of my bed.  My trusty machete (pan­ga) was with­in easy reach, so with 6 very fast and accu­rate WHACKS, that lit­tle crit­ter was in 6 pieces!  I then crushed his head with the point of the blade (that’s Bib­li­cal yah know!), scooped it up in my dust pan, and gave my guard a heart attack when I opened the front door and hand­ed it to him to throw away.

Poor guy liked to have jumped out of his skin.  No Mozam­bi­can likes to get that close to a snake, but when I con­vinced him it was super dead, he agreed to dump it in our garbage pit.  AND NO, I didn’t both­er to take a pho­to of the dead snake.  At 4 in the morn­ing, I just want­ed it out of my house!

Need­less to say, I was PRAISING THE LORD for reveal­ing the snake, and keep­ing it from crawl­ing into bed with me!  I also asked the Holy Spir­it to REVEAL any oth­ers that might be lurk­ing in my house.  None have shown their head, so I feel sure that was the only one that got in.

LACK OF KNOWLEDGE WILL KILL YOU

Sad­ly, 3 of Pas­tor Alberto’s fam­i­ly were elec­tro­cut­ed in Pem­ba in the same storm that tore up our build­ings on Fri­day night.  The house of his niece and her 2 young boys was wired for elec­tric­i­ty with UNINSULATED WIRE.  The high winds blew the wire onto the TIN ROOF of the house, elec­tri­fy­ing every­thing.  The moth­er was hit first.  Her 2 young chil­dren were elec­tro­cut­ed when they grabbed her as she began to con­vulse.  A neigh­bor man was also elec­tro­cut­ed when he tried to pull the chil­dren off their moth­er.  Many peo­ple wire their hous­es with what­ev­er type wire they can find.  All of Mozam­bique is on 220 volt pow­er, leav­ing no room for mis­takes if you touch an open wire.  A sad reminder why safe­ty rules for build­ing mate­ri­als are a must.  Pas­tor Alber­to per­formed the funer­als, and is now on his way back to con­tin­ue train­ing up Pas­tors in Namuno District.

NEW YEARS PARTY A SUCCESS FOR 150+ ORPHANS/WIDOWS

 

The pho­tos tell it all, but games, great food (2 goats and 120 lbs of rice), and lot of cook­ies, can­dy, and bal­loons made a great New Year’s par­ty for our children.

You can tell from Dixon’s face, that he tru­ly feels secure in the new swing seats.  Much safer than the wood­en seats we pre­vi­ous­ly had, these nylon “snug­gy” swings won’t hurt as bad if a child gets hit by them.  THANK YOU to the ele­men­tary school chil­dren in EVANS, LA for this won­der­ful gift!

WIDOW’S RECEIVE NEW HOES AND MACHETTES FOR NEW YEARS

Thanks to sev­er­al donors in the USA and RSA, we were able to bless 700 vil­lage wid­ows who care for orphans, with a new hoe and machete.

I couldn’t pass up this pho­to of baby DANIEL as he laid claim to the hoe we gave his fos­ter moth­er.  That lit­tle face tru­ly says “It’s MINE!”

My entire staff and our res­i­dent orphans all send our sin­cere thanks to each of you read­ing this, for with­out your help, we could not bless an end­less mass of chil­dren with a new life through Jesus Christ.  Each of you are a piece of God’s puz­zle, and because you do your part, we can do ours.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHRISTMAS

Dec. 22, I awoke quite ill with severe den­tal pain and a swollen face.  With the near­est den­tist 1000 miles away (dis­tance from Maine to north­ern Flori­da), I need­ed to make some fast phone calls and take action or suf­fer pos­si­ble sep­sis.  The cul­prit was most like­ly an abscess that my den­tist and Doc­tor were treat­ing with strong antibi­otics that was obvi­ous­ly not respond­ing.  (I’d been on 2 dif­fer­ent antibi­otics for 14 days now).

Call­ing in Cape­na from his hol­i­day, (once again), he good natured­ly rushed to our office to be briefed for the takeover.  We all knew that I’d have to go to South Africa for treat­ment since Pem­ba offers noth­ing in den­tal care.  Mario “Big”, my trusty guard, came with me, as we took off for Pem­ba to try and orga­nize a flight.  With Christ­mas just a few days away, I was tru­ly PRAYING for a miracle!

The air­port was the first stop, and the best they could do was “stand by” for Wednes­day.  Off I went to the SOS Clin­ic to meet with the Doc­tor, who end­ed up load­ing me up with pain meds as well as addi­tion­al antibi­otics since mine were almost gone.  He orga­nized an emer­gency den­tal appoint­ment for THURSDAY as there would be no den­tist on duty for Christ­mas Day.  Now the pres­sure was real­ly on to make that Wed. flight!

Went to the air­port Wed. a.m. with a prayer and bags packed, hop­ing some­one would not show up for the flight.  GOD ANSWERED THAT PRAYER, and 15 min­utes before the flight land­ed on the Pem­ba airstrip, I was allowed to pur­chase a seat for there was 2  “no shows”!

Eric Dry fetched me Thurs­day a.m. and whisked me off to the den­tist for an 8:30 a.m. appoint­ment.  NINETY min­utes lat­er, the bad tooth had a com­plete root canal, but they could only put a small fill­ing to cap it since they had no tem­po­rary crowns.  I was told to return in Jan­u­ary for the crown­ing process.  So I’m bet­ter, but sit­ting here with a very sen­si­tive tooth, and chew­ing all food on my left side.  HO HUM, such is the life of those who live deep in the bush.

I felt real­ly bad for our 104 orphans and the 25 fos­ter moth­ers, as we had to can­cel their Christ­mas par­ty on Thurs­day, 24th, due to my sud­den exit.  In 25 years of ser­vice to the Lord, I have only missed ONE Christ­mas Day with “my kids”.   But there just wasn’t time to ori­en­tate Cape­na and the staff on what need­ed to be done.  So the deci­sion was made to hold their par­ty on New Year’s Eve Day.

The Lord gave me a fun Christ­mas with my friend, Elz­abe, who would have been all alone if I had not been in South Africa.  She was “dog sit­ting” for her 2 children’s fam­i­lies while they were on hol­i­day, so we cel­e­brat­ed with a nice Christ­mas lunch and played with the 3 dog­gies.  Good friend, great food, and fun dogs.  Bush Bun­ny was right at home in that world.

JESUS THROWS A SURPRISE PARTY FOR THE ORPHANS ON CHRISTMAS DAY!

 

 

Cape­na received a sur­prise deliv­ery of 116 gift box­es for our chil­dren on Christ­mas Eve from the local min­ing company.

He was told that sev­er­al peo­ple from the min­ing com­pa­ny would arrive Christ­mas Morn­ing to dis­trib­ute the gifts to the children.

Each child received a pack­age that includ­ed school mate­ri­als, a bal­loon, choco­late can­dy and cook­ies.  I was THRILLED to hear that Jesus gave a spe­cial sur­prise to our chil­dren.  This is a Jesus FIRST! He nev­er fails to amaze us with His Love for these children.

TOMASINA’S CAST (OR WHAT’S LEFT OF IT) AFTER 3 WEEKS IN THE BUSH

Lit­tle Tomasi­na is the 4 year old orphan girl we took to Pem­ba 3 weeks ago to get her leg reset and cast­ed after she fell and broke her ankle.

Kids can be real­ly tough on casts, and this lit­tle girl has lit­er­al­ly walked out of hers.  (The cast is hang­ing off a the bot­tom.)  Car­l­i­tos picked her up for her fol­low up con­sult on his AWANA motor­bike as the trail to her mud hut is too wet for even 4 wheel dri­ve to get through.  (We had 2 hours of sol­id rain last night.)  They are off to the hos­pi­tal for assess­ment to see if she needs a replace­ment cast or not.  Looks to me like Jesus healed her up in record time.

Note: No cast was need­ed, for as soon as they removed the torn up one, she showed them she could walk just fine!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

2015 has been a tough year for my staff and I, but one with many great new hap­pen­ings.  We now have well over 4,000 children/WEEK learn­ing God’s Word via the AWANA GAMES CLUBS.

Our desire is take Jesus to many more chil­dren by EXPANDING the pro­grams to many more vil­lages and even oth­er Dis­tricts (Coun­ties) this year.

As you walk “hand in hand” with us, we will con­tin­ue to walk “hand in hand” with the many 1000’s of chil­dren that Jesus sent us too.

JESUS named us ORPHANS UNLIMITED.  He meant it, and is show­ing us that the HARVEST IS RIPE.  We just have to reap it!

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US BRING IN THE HARVEST.

 EMERGENCY RUN TO PEMBA

 SAVES LAYLA’S LIFE

Sun­day, 8a.m. Lay­la felt sick and began to vom­it large amounts of flu­ids, was suf­fer­ing body aches, and had a rapid­ly ris­ing fever.  Around here that means malar­ia is usu­al­ly the cul­prit, and on a Sun­day in our area, good luck get­ting a lab test to prove it.   I gave her anti-vom­it­ing med­i­cine, fol­lowed a bit lat­er by the first dose of malar­ia treatment.

I knew we’d “lost the bat­tle” when she vom­it­ed the malar­ia meds with­in 15 min­utes, mean­ing she need­ed IV flu­ids and IV malar­ia treat­ment imme­di­ate­ly.  I called the Pem­ba SOS hos­pi­tal, and the Doc agreed.  Work­ing faster than a beaver in a flood, I raced around lock­ing up the com­pound, orga­nized extra guards, called Cape­na to take over for me, loaded Lay­la in the back seat of our King Cab pick-up (lay­ing down), and with­in an hour was on the road with my trust­ed assistant/mechanic, Mario “Big” rid­ing “shot­gun” for me.

A King Cab with a Tur­bo engine can real­ly move on, and I used it well that day, mak­ing it to Pem­ba in record time with no police stopped me.

 God’s GRACE, since I went through 4 major police check points!  (at the speed lim­it of course)

Upon arrival, an IV was start­ed, blood tak­en for lab work, and 2 dif­fer­ent IV meds giv­en to con­trol her upset stom­ach.  The lab report­ed a POSITIVE MALARIA SMEAR, severe dehy­dra­tion with elec­trolyte imbal­ance.  Imme­di­ate IV treat­ment for malar­ia was giv­en, and 3 liters of IV flu­ids with elec­trolytes were  dripped in rapid­ly over the next 3 hours.  All was then under con­trol, PTL, and she was out of imme­di­ate danger.

(She remem­bers none of this.)

We were soon allowed to leave for the night as long as we stayed at the hotel next door to the SOS hos­pi­tal.  She need­ed to be back for addi­tion­al IV malar­ia treat­ments at 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Mon­day.  All went smooth­ly, and she was allowed to leave Pem­ba on Tues­day with an addi­tion­al 3 days of malar­ia treat­ment (pills) in hand.

Since this is her 2nd case of malar­ia in 6 weeks, the SOS Doc­tor wrote a let­ter declar­ing that she should not live in a malar­ia area as she has a poor resis­tance to it

We are now enter­ing the Rainy Sea­son (Dec. to April) which has the PEAK MALARIA TIME each year.

SO LAYLA FLIES OUT ON FRIDAY, DEC. 16TH for the USA.

Lay­la will be missed, and we thank her for the gifts of love, laugh­ter, and Eng­lish that she leaves behind.

ANOTHER NOT SO FORTUNATE

Upon our return to Bala­ma on Tues­day, Car­l­i­tos Jorge came to me with the sad news that his 5 year old nephew had just died of malar­ia.  He had got­ten sick ear­ly that morn­ing with the same vomiting/dehydration symp­toms that Lay­la had, and per­ished 8 hours lat­er.  The local hos­pi­tal tried to save him, but chil­dren are much more sen­si­tive to electrolyte/dehydration imbalances.

MALARIA kills MILLIONS of peo­ple across Africa each year.  Not the actu­al malar­ia lar­vae them­selves, but the hor­ri­ble symp­toms they cause.  If a per­son can’t stay hydrat­ed and keep their elec­trolytes bal­anced, then they lose the bat­tle quick­ly, espe­cial­ly in hot tem­per­a­tures.  Our Decem­ber temps are now above 95 F. (35C) daily.

DIXON GROWING UP!

Tiny Dixon, who came to us weigh­ing 4.4 lbs (2kg) AT 4 MONTHS of age,  is now in pre-school!  Thanks to the good care that your Love Gifts pro­vid­ed, we were able to give him the high pro­tein diet and med­ical atten­tion that saved his life.

Dixon, now 4 years old, stands here with­out his shirt, ask­ing me to fix the burn on his chest.  He dropped a spoon full of hot cere­al on him­self, and now needs a bandaid for his “oweey”.   He’s a tough lit­tle boy, and didn’t even cry when I treat­ed it.  He was tough, cute, and full of JOY when he came to us.  He’s grow­ing into a hand­some young man, and has a smile that melts the heart of all the lit­tle girls who play with him in our pre-school.

TOGETHER WE ARE MAKING A BIG, BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF THESE LITTLE ONES!

AN OFFERING OF LOVE

Com­plete Wid­ow and moth­er  group pos­es for a pho­to with the gifts they brought.

Our Bala­ma Pas­tors and Fos­ter Moth­ers request­ed to meet with me yes­ter­day for prayer in the large shad­ed area in front of our employ­ee kitchen.  It’s 95 degrees F (35 C) in the shade and much hot­ter in the intense Decem­ber sun­shine.   They came to pray with me in hon­or of my Mom’s pass­ing on Nov. 4th.  They brought food gifts (2 stems of bananas, fresh toma­toes, and a bag of fresh baked bread), plus each wid­ow and Pas­tor gave a mon­ey offering.

 Pre­sen­ta­tion of love offer­ings in our shad­ed meet­ing area.

They are not sit­ting on the ground just because there is no where else to sit.  This is also a sign of respect.

I was so touched, as they prayed for the Peace of JESUS over me, my Dad, and 2 broth­ers.  Tears streamed down my face as each per­son placed “a widow’s mite” in the offer­ing plate.

These wid­ows have no income, yet they all gave sac­ri­fi­cial­ly from their week­ly food mon­ey we give them each Thurs­day for fruit and veg­gies.  To reject the gift would have been an insult, as they gave from their hearts.  JESUS IS LOVE, and that love was shown beyond mea­sure in yesterday’s pray meeting.

Jesus nev­er ceas­es to amaze me by show­ing HIS LOVE to me through these people.

SCHOOL’S OUT AND THE KIDS AWAIT THEIR FINAL REPORT CARDS!

It’s always a les­son in patience for our chil­dren after tak­ing finals.  They nev­er know if it will be 1 week or 2 before the results are post­ed.  So they “hang in there”, as 4 days a week they con­tin­ue with AWANA GAMES/ Bible lessons, study Eng­lish with Lay­la, and play soc­cer or bas­ket­ball in the late evenings.

CARLITOS JORGE AND AMBROSIO BREAK ALL KNOWN AWANA RECORDS!

  Car­l­i­tos and  2 oth­ers packed onto his bike.  Rufi­no stayed behind for there was no more room.  (A true Mozam­bi­can would have put the fourth man on the lug­gage rack and had him hold the AWANA mate­ri­als.)   That’s a bit dan­ger­ous for my taste.

.I didn’t think it pos­si­ble, but with the help of his new motor bike, Car­l­i­tos and Ambro­sio min­is­tered to 935 chil­dren and adults last Saturday!

His pro­gram includ­ed 6 AWANA groups in FOUR VILLAGESover an 8 hour time frame!  Leav­ing at 5 a.m. and return­ing around 2:30pm!

THE FINAL REMOTE VILLAGE OF THAT DAY, Mar­riri (Mah-rear‑y), was a new loca­tion totally!

Mar­riri, pop­u­la­tion 3, 000, has nev­er heard the gospel, as no church has ever exist­ed there.

Both adults and chil­dren were excit­ed, and the crowd was large for a first time meeting.

It is obvi­ous that this is too much for any team in one day, so I had Car­l­i­tos orga­nize a 3 man team that went unan­nounced to Mar­riri yesterday.

Why only 3 men?  Because all 4 couldn’t fit on his motor bike.

I didn’t like the added dan­ger of doing this, but 2 men couldn’t han­dle the job and we lacked a 2nd bike. Car­l­i­tos promised to dri­ve slow­ly and we prayed for their safe­ty.  They all returned with­out inci­dent, PTL!

Our Three­some was greet­ed by an excit­ed vil­lage chief, 345 chil­dren, and 25 adults.

Anoth­er bike like the one in the pho­to can be bought for $900.

With a sec­ond bike, we can send all 4 team mem­bers to help spread the love of Jesus in this very large, remote area.

With 2 teams total­ing 4 men, they can break up the chil­dren into 2 meet­ings which ide­al is to keep the groups to about 150 chil­dren each AND have time to trav­el and orga­nize oth­er groups in the near­by area.

HELPING THE HANDICAPPED

All our moth­ers need hand brooms for sweep­ing their homes, and the ever present, “pin­era” or small flat bas­ket for sift­ing food.

Both these items are made local­ly by hand­i­capped men, and my per­son­al pol­i­cy is that I only buy from them.

Some of these men walk or wheel them­selves in 3 wheel bicy­cles up to 5 miles because they know I will buy what they have to sell.

Help­ing those who help them­selves is what we stand by.

Hope you all had a great Thanks­giv­ing Day with your families.

Since this is only an Amer­i­can Hol­i­day, our staff spent the day bless­ing oth­ers with a food give out to the orphans that totaled 2.5 TONS of food.

Lay­la and I took the after­noon off to eat a sim­ple meal from local foods and played a Rum­mikub tour­na­ment.  (She won 3 games to 2.)

Fel­low­ship, food, and fun.  Keep­ing Jesus and His Love at the fore­front all the time.

For Jesus is LOVE and in HIS EYES, all that mat­ters if that we show it dai­ly to all those around us.

THE FINAL “PUSH” TO DISTRIBUTE TONS OF FOOD BEFORE THE RAINY SEASON STARTS

This week flew by as we spent each morn­ing load­ing our Land Cruis­er pick-up (the work horse of Africa) with small loads that totaled 9.2 TONS total,  and sent it out to our 12 remote vil­lage Pas­tors and their families

Our Pas­tors received this food offer­ing as part of their “ben­e­fits”, to help sup­ple­ment what they grow in their own fields.

Our goal is to make sure that their fam­i­lies have enough to eat dur­ing the tough times of the year.

Pre­vent­ing “dis­tract­ed Pas­tors”, keeps God’s Word going forth all year round.

Hun­gry Tum­mies have no ears (lis­ten to no one), and in this case, no strength to teach!

We also dis­trib­uted 3 tons of rice to our staff’s fam­i­lies as Decem­ber to March is the sever­est time of hunger for many in Mozambique.

The har­vest was poor this year, and many fam­i­lies are now out of food, includ­ing our workers.

Yes, they get a salary and do buy what they can, BUT food prices have sky rock­et­ed with the unsta­ble world­wide economy.

Rice, the only bulk food avail­able this time of year, has DOUBLED in price in the last 30 days.

A 20kg (55lb.) bag of rice now equals a week’s pay for most of our staff, so our rice offer­ing was a big help.

We can’t help every­one, but THANKS TO YOUR LOVE GIFTS, we are doing what we can to help those in our “extend­ed family”

MANUEL AND CREW made 2 round trips this week to Melu­co with our 7 ton truck. This filled the Melu­co ware­house with enough food to feed the 400+ orphans through May, 2016.

Each trip is 9 hours one way, so it is always an overnight jour­ney.  They also did a major water well repair with all new pip­ing while there this week, bring­ing clean water to a vil­lage of over 5,000 people.

On Tues­day, this com­ing week, this same crew will take the final load of food, machetes,  and corn seed to the 115 ELEPHANT VILLAGE ORPHANS.

Ware­house Team sewing up corn sacks that have just been sift­ed and cleaned for milling.  Our ham­mer mill turns the whole corn into corn flour for the orphans.  The corn flour is boiled until it is stiff, form­ing the pop­u­lar food, “Sheema” as it is local­ly called.  The bland Sheema is rolling into a ball, as they eat it with their hands, and then dipped into what­ev­er sauce (meat or veg­gie) they have for that meal.

Car­pen­ters cut­ting 4x4’s into 2 x 4’s to repair ter­mite dam­age in one of our ware­hous­es.  The ter­mites, bet­ter known as the “under­ground mafia” are a con­stant chal­lenge in all of Bala­ma.  The two young men on the right are orphans who grew up in our pro­gram and are now train­ing to be mas­ter carpenters.

Our week’s work is bet­ter told in pho­tos than in words, so I bid you good­bye till next week!

BUSH BUNNY BACK IN BALAMA, SENDING THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR KIND WORDS, PRAYERS, AND LOVE GIFTS DURING THIS LAST WEEK.

It was a hec­tic 11 days with 5 of those days being in the air or on the road so I could join my fam­i­ly in Eagle Lake for my Mom’s funeral.

I was great­ly encour­aged to vis­it with all of you who were able to come, as well as those who were able to call.

I tru­ly appre­ci­ate your love and kind­ness dur­ing this dif­fi­cult time.

TV CREW VISITS OUR BALAMA ORPHANS

While I was busy in the USA last week, Cape­na, Lay­la, and our entire staff were mov­ing 20+ tons of corn and beans (seed and food) over a 4 day peri­od to 1,697 orphans and wid­ows in 20 villages.

A Mozam­bi­can TV crew trav­eled with them to all the give outs, film­ing what we do best (serv­ing orphans & wid­ows in distress).

They have promised us a DVD of the pro­gram once it airs in Moz.  So please be patient, and we will get it onto our web­site ONCE IT IS AVAILABLE.

They gave us no date, so I am not sure how long that will be.

The 356 wid­ows who care for these orphans were very excit­ed as sev­er­al donors made it pos­si­ble for us to gift new MACHETES (Pan­gas) to them.  We plan to give the remain­ing 250 wid­ows in Melu­co Dis­trict a machete by Jan­u­ary.  Machetes are used dai­ly in Mozam­bi­can homes for every­thing from cut­ting fire wood, to killing snakes and any oth­er “crit­ters” that hap­pen to become a nui­sance around their homes.  A high­ly val­ued tool, great­ly prized in every Mozam­bi­can home.

SURPRISE DONATION FROM A LOCAL FOOD COMPANY!

Our chil­dren were blessed with over 100 lbs of beef, pork, and chick­en last Sun­day.  Lay­la was super sur­prised on Sun­day morn­ing when a new food com­pa­ny work­ing in the area “dropped by” with a Freez­er box full of meat!  Most of our chil­dren have nev­er eat­en beef, so this was a great treat for them.

On Thurs­day, Nov. 19, this same com­pa­ny blessed us with 2000 cups of YOGURT!  A treat that our chil­dren have nev­er tasted!

The looks on their faces were pre­cious, as they sat lick­ing their cups and try­ing to fig­ure out what they were tast­ing.  Most have nev­er had milk since they were weaned from their mothers. 

They also received bananas to go with their treat, so it was a super fun day watch­ing kids expe­ri­ence a new food

God is bless­ing us in new and mighty ways.  He nev­er ceas­es to amaze me.

BALAMA GOAT HERD IS STILL KICKING

Many of you have asked me how our 230 goats are doing.  They are pro­duc­ing well, as we were blessed with the birth of 5 new baby goats last week.

I love to cud­dle these soft and fuzzy new­borns, but they are not too fond of being picked up!

We present­ly have 32 males weigh­ing over 70 lbs each that are ready for mar­ket.  The sale of these 32 males will pro­vide our 95 school aged orphans with school books, and some of the fab­ric need­ed for their 2016 school uni­forms.  Your love gifts gave us the goats, and now the goats are giv­ing to the children.

Thank you for help­ing us bring edu­ca­tion to the chil­dren through our 4 legged friends.

DEATH OF ONE OF OUR TEENAGE ORPHANS

It is a sad day when sadis­tic, satan­ic, rit­u­al killings strikes one of our own.  Assane, an Albi­no orphan who grew up in our pro­gram, was mur­dered last Sat­ur­day night by a group of 3 very evil peo­ple.  They were caught and are in jail as I write.  Assane, 16 years old, had been relo­cat­ed last year to his home vil­lage with our help, along with his grand­moth­er and sis­ter.  We bought them a mud hut, and they were orga­niz­ing their farm to become inde­pen­dent of our vil­lage food dis­tri­b­u­tions by 2016.  There is no expla­na­tion for this hor­ri­ble deed, except that these peo­ple were part of a cult who believed that Albi­no body parts held spe­cial powers.
