LAYING A STRONG PORTUGUESE FOUNDATION

All 19 of our school age chil­dren also attend a study peri­od for an hour per day in order to strength­en what they learn at school. All but 2 of our 66 chil­dren were raised here, but they pre­fer speak­ing Makua (trib­al lan­guage) over the nation­al lan­guage of Por­tuguese. Study time rein­forces their Por­tuguese and their Math skills.

A NEW CONCRETE FLOOR FOR THE BAWANA/BASKETBALL COURT

A group from a local com­pa­ny took it upon them­selves to raise the funds so our chil­dren could have a new Bawana/Basketball court! Our old court’s con­crete floor had begun to crack and def­i­nite­ly need­ed a facelift, but the cost to fix it was a bit expen­sive as we esti­mat­ed it would take 84 sacks of cement.Count in sand and labor, and it would be a mega project. That didn’t phase the young man who was lead­ing the local group! He orga­nized and deliv­ered the cement, mak­ing it pos­si­ble to begin the work on April 21st, as the rains FINALLY stopped.

Spe­cial Love Gifts from among our friends in the USA pro­vid­ed the sand and labor, so it is a joint project that will bring many smiles to all our chil­dren.

I will keep you updat­ed as we progress with this project that is esti­mat­ed to take 3 weeks if all goes well.

The very pro­fes­sion­al bas­ket­ball hoops that will be mount­ed at each end of our court. This goes far beyond what we dreamed about.

1. All 66 of our chil­dren are stay­ing healthy (thanks to good food that your Love Gifts make pos­si­ble).
2. The BBC received new T‑shirts so that they are easy to iden­ti­fy when out on the road or in the vil­lages.

2‑DAY-OLD INFANTS EACH RESCUED BY A FAMILY MEMBER

Both infant boys from dif­fer­ent fam­i­lies were res­cued by a fam­i­ly mem­ber and brought to us by Social Ser­vices for milk assis­tance. The baby boy in the fore­ground was found in the bush by this grand­moth­er, after her men­tal­ly defi­cient daugh­ter (who was raped), had the infant on her own. The daugh­ter had run away and hid in the bush when she felt the labor pains begin. It is a mir­a­cle the infant survived.The 2‑day-old infant in the back­ground is an orphan, res­cued by the aunt after the moth­er passed away just after giv­ing birth in her mud hut.

Nei­ther of these lit­tle boys received the essen­tial colostrum milk from their moth­ers that pro­vides them with immu­ni­ty.

Our children’s Direc­tor, Anna gave them instruc­tions on how to bot­tle feed the infants. We are pray­ing they both make it.

BCI BANK CELEBRATES 30TH ANNIVERSARY BY GIVING BALLS TO OUR CHILDREN

It was fun watch­ing the children’s faces as the 4‑member bank team pulled out box­es full of balls that they gift­ed to our chil­dren. The bank’s pump broke, so they only blew up 11 of the 25 balls they gave us, so our staff will take care of that with our ball pump.

Bank brings balls and jump ropes to our chil­dren. They were ecstatic!

While wait­ing on the bank team to arrive, Marce­lo, who had nev­er been on the swings, found out how much fun it is.

Although a bit afraid at first, he decid­ed this was fun, and final­ly had to be asked to leave the swing so that oth­ers could enjoy it.

SURPRISE EASTER PARTY FOR THE CHILDREN

The Administrator’s wife sur­prised me with a late after­noon vis­it on Wednes­day, last week. She request­ed that we set up for an East­er Sun­day par­ty, and she would bring all the food! (She owns a restau­rant).

On Sun­day, they arrived with mul­ti­ple cars, and lots of food (rice, beans, beef, chick­en, and French fries). To top it off, a large BIRTHDAY CAKE was deliv­ered by her dri­ver! That’s when we found out that this was the Administrator’s wife’s birthday!

She gave our kids a par­ty to cel­e­brate her spe­cial day!The kids had a blast, eat­ing all they want­ed, and there was enough left over to feed all the moth­ers who stayed in the hous­es to guard the babies.

This gen­er­ous woman then hand­ed out 48 spe­cial Woman’s Day Caplanas (cot­ton cloth used as a skirt). This is a very cher­ished gift by the women and all our moth­ers and female staff received one!

The moth­ers who came to the par­ty were the first to receive the spe­cial Wom­en’s Day caplana.

We are very grate­ful for the gen­eros­i­ty shown our big fam­i­ly, as it was no small feat to orga­nize all of this. All we did was set up tables and orga­nize the chil­dren.

TUESDAY, APRIL 7, NATIONAL WOMAN’S DAY

Some of you have asked how many moth­ers it takes to care for 47 lit­tle ones under 5 years old.

Most of the moth­ers live here, but some of them are “day moth­ers”.  The 8 “day moth­ers” come in at 6 a.m. to wash clothes and help clean the house and dish­es, so the 29 “live in” moth­ers can care for the chil­dren (dress­ing, bathing, chang­ing dia­pers, etc).

So today, we hon­or these women who live and work with us so that these orphans can have a “moth­er” and a future.

ROSILDA HOME FROM HOSPITAL 

Rosil­da is a bit hap­pi­er after get­ting out of hos­pi­tal. She has a neg­a­tive malar­ia smear now, so we are thrilled! Thanks very much for all your prayers for this cute lit­tle 4‑month-old.

She’s home and hap­py to be there!
A WEEK OF BLESSINGS TO OUR CHILDREN 

It is Woman’s Month in Mozam­bique, and both the BCI Bank in our state, and the Com­man­dant, a woman, decid­ed to bless our chil­dren with food gifts and treats in cel­e­bra­tion of this month. The kids were ecsta­t­ic and we were all in shock at the nice gifts our kids were blessed with. It was total­ly unex­pect­ed and a big sur­prise to all of us.
